Course Summary

Have you ever wondered what happens at a crime scene or why people commit crime? Do you want a better understanding of how the legal system works and how criminal cases are processed?

This course seeks to help you to understand why some crimes are hidden within society and how the systems such as the police, courts and probation service deal with offenders, victims and those who witness crime.

This course is assessed through examinations in Year 12 and 13 and controlled assessment.

Course Details

We cover the following topics:

Unit 1: Changing awareness of crime

Unit 2: Theories of crime

Unit 3: From crime scene to courtroom

Unit 4: Crime and punishment

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The course is assessed in Year 12 and 13 and students will complete units 1 and 2 to gain the Certificate in Criminology in Year 12. Students move on to complete the diploma in Year 13 and they are assessed in units 3 and 4.

Units 1 and 3 These are assessed by controlled assessment which is set by the examination board and marked by the teaching staff and externally moderated.

Units 2 and 4 These are assessed by external examination. The course is graded from A* - E and has been recognised by University admissions.

Entry requirements

To join BG6, you must achieve five or more GCSE grades 4 or above. These must include a minimum GCSE grade 4 in English Language or Literature and Mathematics and also meet the specific subject entry requirements for courses you are interested in. SPECIFIC SUBJECT REQUIREMENTS: GCSE Grade 4 in English Language.
