Course Summary
Fine Art A level will develop important skills in creative thinking and working, and problem solving. The course is perfect for students who enjoy working practically and creatively. It will equip you for any future career as an artist or designer, in advertising, illustration, architecture, interior design or teaching, as well as working in the media, film, TV or galleries. Many of our previous Fine Art students have had experience of exhibiting their work publicly since leaving school at 18.
Course Details
Students will gain expertise in drawing, painting, observation and expressive ideas development. You will learn how to create ‘complete’ pieces of Art and personal responses. You will learn diverse techniques such as oil painting, abstract art, observational drawing, video, camera and digital work. Students will be given opportunities to take part in artist workshops and gallery visits to local, national and even international galleries each year. Students will also be closely linked to local Art Departments at Higher Educational institutions and be shown how to create a dynamic and professional portfolio that will help them when applying to university courses.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Year 12 is assessed internally based on initial skills portfolio and individual project work.
Year 13 A level Assessment: Component 1 (60%) - Personal Investigation This is a practical investigation project that includes a 1000 word essay and the development of a personal response to the students’ own choice of theme.
Component 2 (40%) - Externally Set Task Students will select one of a series of starting points and develop their own response. Preparation time of several months is followed by a 15 hour session in which students complete their final response. The year culminates in a final exhibition for students.
