Course Summary

A Level Chemistry attempts to answer the big question ‘what is the world made of’ and it’s the search for this answer that makes this subject so fascinating. From investigating how one substance can be changed drastically into another, to researching a new wonder drug to save millions of lives, the opportunities that chemistry provides are endless.

A Level Chemistry builds on the work done in GCSE Science and Maths, so you’ll need good GCSE results from both. Written communication is also important as you’ll need to interpret data and write clear and concise explanations based on the evidence provided.

Course Details

A Level Chemistry is a two year programme of study. Examinations take place at the end of the second year. The course is taught in parallel by two teachers who teach independent strands of the teaching themes. The practical element of the course is linked to the teaching themes and is incorporated throughout the two year teaching plan. There is no coursework on this course. A separate endorsement of practical skills will be taken alongside the A Level. This will be assessed by teachers and will be based on direct observation of competency in a range of skills that are not accessible in a written exam.

Monthly synoptic assessments are taken by learners to ensure all the taught content is assessed continuously throughout the two year programme.

A baseline assessment is also taken by all learners within the first month of enrolling onto the course to ensure the learner is on the right course to achieve their future career goals.
