Course Summary
Child Development offers the opportunity to develop both academic and practical skills and techniques, such as: teamwork and partnership building, personal and professional development, communication, evaluation, research, analysis and reflection as well as current legislation and educational frameworks. These transferable skills will benefit our students if they choose to progress to higher education.
Course Details
In Year 12 you will explore: the role of the early years, childcare and education practitioner as well as human development from conception to 19 years.
In Year 13 you will learn about the key legislation, policies and procedures that underpin working with children and young people, as well as statutory educational frameworks and play activities suitable for different age ranges.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Students will need to complete five mandatory units and two external assessments. The external assessments will be a scenario based short answer examination and an extended written examination. Both will be taken under controlled supervision.
Entry requirements
To join BG6, you must achieve five or more GCSE grades 4 or above. These must include a minimum GCSE grade 4 in English Language or Literature and Mathematics and also meet the specific subject entry requirements for courses you are interested in.
SPECIFIC SUBJECT REQUIREMENTS:
GCSE Grade 4 in English Language and GCSE Grade 4 in Mathematics. A Level 2 Pass in OCR Child Development if studied.

This knowledge based course will prepare our students and assist them to progress to Higher Education and Apprenticeship courses. An Advanced Apprenticeship for the Children & Young People’s Workforce can lead to employment such as an Early Years Worker, Assistant Care Worker, Assistant Youth Support and Community Worker. Following the Early Years Educator route can lead to Nursery Worker, Supervisor – Nursery Nurse, Teaching Assistant.
Completing this course can be beneficial to going on to study at degree level on courses such as Primary Education, Early Childhood Education or Childhood Studies.
