Course Summary

This course is ideal for those who wish to understand more about the role of the childcare practitioner.

This qualification has been designed to support students as they develop their knowledge, understanding and skills when caring for and supporting the learning and development of children aged 0–11 years and 11 months.

Course Details

You will take part in a placement of at least 120 hours throughout the year, which will help refine teamwork skills, independence, confidence and improve your chances of gaining employment. You will be assessed by the supervisor and centre assessor at the early years and primary school settings.

As part of this course, you will study the following units:

  • Child development from birth to 11 years and 11 months
  • The role of the Childcare Practitioner
  • Play and learning and cultural capital
  • Nutrition
  • Exploring legislation
  • Professional skills development
  • Physical development and activity

How will it be delivered and assessed?

You will be assessed by your tutor and placement assessor using a range of methods. This will include direct observation of you on your placement, oral questioning, a portfolio of evidence, and written assignments or tasks as well as an exam and a mini project (ESP).

Entry requirements

You need to be aged 16 or above. You will also need to hold four GCSEs at Grade 3 or above including Maths and English.

Equipment required

You will need to provide writing materials, stationery and a folder. Having access to a computer (computers can be accessed in College) would also be useful but it is not essential. You will also need a current enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate and willingness to travel to and from your placement. You will also receive a pack when you enrol which includes two polo shirts for your placement and your DBS certificate. This pack costs approximately £66.

Your next steps...
