Course structure

The course is highly practical, with most of the learning taking place in specialist plumbing workshops, supported by classroom-based theory.

Course content

Throughout the course, you will develop core plumbing skills, including:

Cold Water Systems: installation, testing, and maintenance

Hot Water Systems: principles, components, and installation methods

Sanitation and Drainage: above-ground systems

Central Heating: basic domestic heating systems and components

Pipework Fabrication: working with copper, plastic and low carbon steel

Health and Safety: essential legislation and safe working practices within building servicesW

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Your progress will be assessed through a combination of:


  • Practical assessments: observed tasks carried out in realistic workshop environments
  • Online or written examinations: mainly multiple-choice tests delivered via the City & Guilds e-volve platform

Entry requirements

You will need to hold a GCSE English and Maths. One of these qualifications must be at least a minimum grade 2, while the other must be grade 3 or above.

Equipment required

You will need safety footwear, overalls, writing materials, drawing equipment and paper.
