Course Summary

Many people begin working with animals from a young age, with an instinctive desire to care for a range of species, not just domestic pets.

Job opportunities include dog handling, wildlife rangers, vets and zoologist with several more career options within the military.


Course Details

Students gain hands on experience within the animal care unit at College and a local animal collection.

This is ideal for you if you are interested in working with animals. You will gain theoretical knowledge and practical experience at a variety of sites.

You will be expected to use and develop knowledge and skills with the animals. This is a full time one year course.

Aspects of the course will include:

  • Undertaking work related experience in the land-based industries
  • Maintaining animal accommodation
  • Undertaking practical animal feeding
  • Maintaining animal health and welfare
  • Contributing to the nursing of animals
  • Introduction to the principles and practices of animal behaviour and handling
  • Understanding of the basic principles of animal biology

Entry requirements

This is an intermediate course suitable for those who have at least 4 GCSEs (preferably in English, Maths or Science) at grade D or grade 3 or a relevant/equivalent Level 1 qualification at a merit or above.

Industry experience will also be taken into account when considering applications from non-traditional entrants.

Candidates will also need a satisfactory reference from their school or college. Successful applicants will be asked to complete a research question prior to enrolment.

If your application is successful you will have an interview with a specialist tutor.

Your next steps...

A merit or above allows for progression to Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Animal Management, or National Foundation Diploma in Animal Management.

You may choose to enter the care industry, working in kennels, catteries, pet shops, veterinary surgeries or zoos.
