Course Summary
Further Mathematics is a separate A level qualification that can be taken alongside Mathematics A level. The course for Further Mathematics is linear, with exams for the full A level course taken in the summer of year 13.
Further mathematicians will take an AS Further Mathematics exam at the end of year 12. Students will then have the choice of whether to continue with Further Mathematics or drop down to single mathematics for year 13.
We recommend students study Further Mathematics to at least AS level if they want to study Engineering, Physics, Computing, Mathematics or Economics at a top University.
Course Details
Further Mathematics includes pure mathematics with the applied options of statistics and mechanics.
Students will also need to be competent with technology, especially the use of Graphic software.
Further Mathematics A level includes:
Pure: Proof, complex numbers, graph sketching, matrices, de Moivre’s theorem, differential equations, roots of unity, vectors (including 3D), power series, conics, hyperbolic functions (including differentiation and integration), polar co-ordinates.
Mechanics: Friction, moments, work, energy and power, centres of mass
Statistics: Chi squared, Poisson distribution, discrete and continuous random variables, confidence intervals.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Further mathematicians will take an AS Further Mathematics exam at the end of year 12.
Exams for the full A level course are taken in the summer of year 13.
Entry requirements
Minimum requirements for admission to the Sixth Form:
- A grade 5 in Mathematics
- A grade 5 in English Language or English Literature
- Achieving at least 3 other GCSEs at grade 6 or above.
- Subject specific requirement: Grade 8 in Mathematics. Students must take Further Mathematics in addition to Mathematics and as a fourth subject.
