Course Summary

This course is designed to provide learners with a good introduction to the professional music sector with a focus on performance, including musical skills development and professional practice. This is a highly practical course where students will regularly be performing to peers and live audiences so it essential that they feel comfortable on their instrument of choice.

This Extended Certificate is equivalent to one A Level and carries equivalent UCAS points.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Year 1

Unit 1: Music Theory & Harmony (25%)

Non-examined assessment (NEA) work completed and assessed internally before being externally moderated by the exam board.

Unit 2: Professional Practice in the Music Industry (25%)

• 5-hour assessment worth 70 marks that is set by the exam board, completed in a supervised environment, and then marked by the exam board.

• Allowed 3 hours to carry out research of the given scenario, under monitored conditions, before starting the 5 hour set tasks.

• Completed over a two-week period.

• Work is evidence and assessed through a written submission.

Year 2

Unit 3: Ensemble Music Performance (33%)

• Performance evidence submitted via a 30-to-45-minute video.

• 2-hour assessment that is set by the exam board, completed in a supervised environment, and then marked by the exam board at the end of the performance window.

• The total assessment for this unit is worth 80 marks.

Unit 6: Solo Performance (17%)

• Non-examined assessment (NEA) work completed and assessed internally before being externally moderated by the exam board.

• A recording of the final performance is then submitted.

Qualification Grading

External assessments are graded Near Pass, Pass, Merit or Distinction.

NEA units are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.

All units must achieve a grade to be awarded the full qualification which is graded Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*

Entry requirements

A Pass or above in a Level 2 Music qualification is desirable. Experience of playing an instrument and/or singing to a good standard is desirable.
