Course Summary

This course is ideal for students who want to pursue a career within Psychology. It will provide students with a breadth of knowledge into the different perspectives and approaches within Psychology, how to conduct psychological research, topics surrounding mental health in Psychology and a detailed look at how the principles of this field can be applied to improving sporting performance in the optional Sports Psychology topic. This Extended Certificate is equivalent to one A Level and carries equivalent UCAS points.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

YEAR 1

Unit 1 – Psychological Approaches and Applications (25%) 1 hour 30 minutes written exam – 72 marks

Unit 2 – Conducting Psychological Research (25%) Non-examined assessment (NEA) work completed and assessed internally before being externally moderated by the exam board.

YEAR 2

Unit 3 – Health Psychology (33%) 2 hour written exam – 70 marks

Unit 6 – Introduction to Psychopathology (17%) Non-examined assessment (NEA) work completed and assessed internally before being externally moderated by the exam board.


External assessments are graded Near Pass, Pass, Merit or Distinction.

NEA units are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.

All units must achieve a grade to be awarded the full qualification which is graded Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*

Entry requirements

GCSE of 4 or above in English and Maths is essential.

Completion of this qualification will enable students to progress onto a career within Psychology, via higher education or entry level employment such as apprenticeships.

This qualification is generally taken alongside other qualifications as part of a 2-year programme of learning. This will enable learners to progress to a degree programme chosen from a range of courses in the psychology sector. It can be taken alongside A Levels in Sociology, Law or Biology that can lead to various career paths within this field such as Criminology or Mental Health Nursing.
