Course Summary
Many people begin working with animals from a young age, with an instinctive desire to care for a range of species, not just domestic pets. Job opportunities include dog handling, wildlife rangers, vets and zoologist with several more career options within the military.
Students gain hands on experience within the animal care unit at College and a local animal collection.
The course is a one year hands-on practical course that takes your knowledge of animal care from the core study in the classroom to the animal care unit at Calderdale College and a local animal collection.
You will have the opportunity to:
• Provide safe & effective working practices in land-based industries
• Develop performance in land-based industries
• Assist with maintaining the health & wellbeing of animals
• Learn about animals in the wild and in society
• Assist with feeding & watering animals
• Assist with the preparation and maintenance of animal accommodation
• Introduction to wildlife and conservation
This course is ideal for any animal lover who wants to pursue having a career in the animal care industry.

Entry requirements
An introductory course suitable for beginners. School leavers should aim for at least 4 GCSEs at grade G or grade 1 or equivalent. Applicants will be interviewed and will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm, commitment and good communication skills.
If your application is successful you will have an interview with a specialist tutor.
Your next steps...
On successful completion of this course you could progress to the Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care or venture into work experience and voluntary opportunities in the animal care industry such as zoos, farms, animal centres, pet shops and groomers.
