Course Summary

A bench joiner is based in a workshop and produces timber products, for example, doors, window frames; staircases; cabinets:

This course aims to provide a basic knowledge of bench joinery and to develop and practise the skills for employment and a career in this craft area.

This is an ideal course for those who are looking to learn on a full-time basis and have identified that they want to enter the construction industry and have a career as a bench joiner.

Bench Joinery study programmes start with a level 1 certificate or level 1 diploma. Learners progress from this to level 2 either as a full-time learner or as part time as an apprentice, with progression available to level 3 either as a full-time learner or as part time as an apprentice.

A qualified bench joiner could earn from £17000 per year and with experience has the potential to earn over £38000.

These study programmes include learning that relates to the following UN Sustainable Development Goals.

On a joinery study programme, you will learn through classroom teaching and activity incorporating IT access. The college has designated workshops and through practical activity, you will develop your carpentry skills.

This learning is supplemented with engagement with industry specialists. The extent of this depends on the level of the study programme and varies from guest speakers and site visits to carrying out practical activity in a live environment supervised and assessed in this environment.


Course Details

All Construction related study programmes cover health, safety, and principles of construction relevant to the trade and sustainability They also aim to develop practical skills for this craft.

For Architectural Joinery you will study:

  • Principles of Construction
  • How to Work Safely in a Construction Environment
  • How to Produce Drawings and Cutting Lists
  • How to Mark Out and Cut Traditional Joints
  • How to Manufacture/Fit Windows and Doors
  • How to Manufacture Staircases
  • How to Set Up and Use a Range of Hand and Power Tools
  • How to Construct a Stud Partition Wall
  • How to Construct a Timber Floor
  • How to Hang a Door


How will it be delivered and assessed?

Theory is assessed through an externally set examination set in March and June; with practical skills assessed through an externally set synoptic assessment completed in May.



Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at Grade 9-4, including English and Maths.

OR

GCSE English and Maths at Grade 9-3 with Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery.

All learners will be required to complete a BKSB assessment.


Your next steps...

On completion, you can progress to Level 3 On Site Construction T level.

Alternatively, if you have gained employment in the sector you may return as an apprentice on a day release basis to achieve a Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard, progressing to the Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard.
