Course Info

A career in education and early childhood development can be stimulating, satisfying and rewarding, and provides the opportunity to influence and shape many lives.

This course is for young people, aged 16 – 18, and those 19 + who would love the opportunity to work as child carers in public and private nurseries, social services and health authorities.

A full range of childcare topics are studied such as child development and the early years’ curriculum.

The course will give you the skills, knowledge and understanding to pursue employment as education professionals.

A full range of childcare topics are studied over two years such as:

Child Health & Development

Play & Learning Safety

Research Skills

Understanding different theory concerning early years

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

All these will be achieved by a variety of assessment methods, portfolios and assignments with a focus on your experiences in work placement carried over 4 days every other week.

The course carries up to 420 UCAS points.

Upon achievement of this qualification it is intended that learners will be able to access higher education or enter the workforce as Early Years Educators. This qualification confers the licence to practise as an Early Years Educator.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The programme is made up of 15 units which are internally marked, a work placement where learners are assessed on their practice and 2 externally marked extended essays.

Entry requirements

You will need at least 5 GCSEs at grade C/grade 4 including English Language.

The course includes placements and all students will need to have a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check. The college will apply and pay for this.

Applicants need to supply two satisfactory references and attend an interview at the college.

Your next steps...

Students can go onto careers working with children in nurseries, crèches and schools, throughout Britain. There is also the opportunity to work in Europe and beyond, with holiday companies and cruise liners.

Students can also progress to the Foundation Degree in Early Years which can be studied at Calderdale College or university.
