Course Summary

The main purpose of the qualification is to develop the scientific principles and practical techniques which will prepare learners to progress to higher education or employment in areas related human science or health care.

This Diploma is equivalent to two A Levels and carries equivalent UCAS points.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Year 1:

Unit 1 – Science fundamentals (12.5%)

2 hours written paper – 90 marks

• comprises short answer questions and questions requiring more extended responses

• a scientific calculator may be used

Unit 2 – Laboratory techniques (12.5%)

2 hours written paper – 90 marks

• comprises short answer questions and questions requiring more extended responses

• a scientific calculator may be used

Unit 3 – Scientific analysis and reporting (16.67%)

2 hours written paper – 90 marks

• comprises short answer questions and questions requiring more extended responses

• a scientific calculator may be used

Year 2:

All Year 2 units involved non-examined assessment (NEA) work completed and assessed internally before being externally moderated by the exam board.

The compulsory units to be completed include

• Unit 5 – Genetics (8.33%)

• Unit 6 – Control of hazards in the laboratory (8.33%)

• Unit 10 – Testing consumer products (8.33%)

Plus an additional four units selected from:

• Unit 4 – Human physiology (8.33%)

• Unit 7 – Human nutrition (8.33%)

• Unit 8 – Cell biology (8.33%)

• Unit 11 – Drug development (8.33%)

• Unit 18 – Microbiology (8.33%)

Qualification Grading

External assessments are graded Near Pass, Pass, Merit or Distinction.

NEA units are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.

All units must achieve a grade to be awarded the full qualification which is graded Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*

Entry requirements

GCSE of 55 or above in Science plus 4 or above in Maths is essential.
