Apprenticeship - Level 3 Engineering Maintenance Technician (Single Discipline)

This Level 3 Engineering Maintenance Technician (Single Discipline) apprenticeship is designed for practical, problem solving individuals who enjoy understanding how machines and systems work and want to build a career in engineering across industries such as manufacturing, energy, and utilities. Over the duration, apprentices gain hands on experience maintaining and improving real equipment and systems, often working both independently and as part of a team to solve faults and optimise performance. Learning takes place through a blend of on the job training, guided instruction, and practical application, supported by experienced engineers and colleagues, with exposure to real workplace challenges and continuous improvement activities.

Beyond technical knowledge in electrical or mechanical biases the course helps learners develop valuable wider skills such as critical thinking, resilience, communication, and teamwork, as well as an understanding of safety, sustainability, and business priorities. Apprentices build confidence by responding to breakdowns, engaging with stakeholders, and managing tasks to industry standards and timescales, all of which support progression into senior technical or leadership roles in engineering.

Apprentices will build a strong foundation of technical and professional skills, including:

Core Knowledge and Skills

Understanding engineering principles, tools, and maintenance techniques

Fault finding, diagnosis, and effective problem-solving

Interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation

Working safely in line with health, safety, and environmental regulations

Specialist Pathway Skills

Depending on their chosen pathway, apprentices will develop expertise in:

Electrical: circuits, motors, control panels, and electrical system maintenance

Mechanical: assemblies, hydraulics, pneumatics, and rotating machinery

These skills equip apprentices to maintain and optimise complex engineering systems across a wide range of industries.

Alongside this, you will work towards a L3 Pearson BTEC Diploma Advanced Manufacturing Engineering delivered on a day-release basis, combined with a work-based Level 3 NVQ Diploma.

You will be assigned a dedicated work-based assessor upon enrolment, who will carry out regular workplace visits to review your progress, observe your practice, and provide support to help you successfully complete your apprenticeship.

Ideally, candidates should have achieved a Grade 4 or above in GCSE Maths and English, or hold an equivalent Level 2 qualification. You must also be employed in a relevant role with an employer who is able to support you throughout the programme.

Candidates may progress onto further study upon successful completion.
