Overview

If you want to enter the building industry and a career in bench joinery, wood machining or furniture production industries, this course is for you.

Details

You will study the following units:

•Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries

The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge to be deemed trained to carry out safe working practices in construction to: - sourcing relevant safety information and using the relevant safety procedures at work.

•Knowledge of construction technology

The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge of building methods and construction technology in relation to understanding the basic principles of: - foundation construction - floor construction - wall construction - roof construction - supply of utilities and services - sustainability within construction.

•Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools

The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to be deemed trained to prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools in relation to: - maintaining and storing portable power tools - using carpentry and joinery portable power tools.

•Understanding information, quantities and communication with others

The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge to be deemed trained to interpret information, determine quantities and communicate with other in relation to: - interpreting information including drawings - estimating quantities of resources from drawings and specifications - communicating effectively to all levels of the construction team.

•Set up and operate cutting and shaping machinery

The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to be deemed trained to set up and operate machinery in relation to: - operating machinery to cut wood and wood based products - maintaining, using and changing tooling on machinery.

•Produce setting out details for routine joinery products

The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to be deemed trained to produce setting out details for routine joinery products in relation to: - interpreting and checking information - producing setting out details prior to the manufacture of joinery products.

•Mark out from setting out details for routine joinery products

The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to be deemed trained to mark out from setting out details for routine joinery products in relation to: - interpreting and checking information - accurately marking out prior to the manufacture of joinery products.

•Manufacture routine joinery products

The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to be deemed trained to manufacture routine joinery products in relation to: - selecting resources to carry out the work - manufacturing routine joinery products.

How will it be delivered?

You will be assessed throughout the course including a practical synopsis assessment and a multiple choice online exam at the end of each unit.

Entry requirements

•A level 1 joinery qualification, and

•A minimum of GCSE English and Maths (one at grade 4 above and one at grade 3 or above) or equivalent.
