This course is ideal for someone looking to pursue a career in agriculture.


There is demand for trained, skilled and motivated young people to enter the agriculture industry. There is an emphasis on combining traditional skills with modern technology/legislation and emerging techniques. The course integrates practical experience with theory lessons both on and off farm and some work experience. You will gain experience in a range of agricultural skills through theory and practical sessions on the farm. Practical experience will be gained through a range of stock tasks, as well as being given an opportunity to select, prepare and show animals/visit shows and exhibitions.

You will study 3 mandatory units:

Undertake work related experience in the land-based industries

You will gain an understanding of the principles of work related experience and how these can be applied in practice.

Environmental and land-based business

You will gain an understanding of the principles of business within the environmental and land-based business, and how these can be applied in practice.

Introduction to crop establishment

This unit focuses on all aspects of crop establishment, and you will develop your knowledge of crop physiology, ground conditions and preparation, crop planting and nutrient supply. You will apply knowledge gained to develop your practical skills in carrying out soil investigation, cultivations and crop establishment.


Introduction to farm animal production

This unit investigates the husbandry skills and livestock production techniques involved in modern farming systems. It will introduce you to the products, production methods and health and welfare requirements of farm animals. You will concentrate on the species traditionally farmed in the UK.

You will also study 3-5 of the following optional units:

  • Introduction farm animal production
  • Introduction to land-based machinery operations
  • Introduction to animal and plant husbandry
  • Introduction to animal and plant biology
  • Participate in providing estate maintenance
  • Conservation and improvement of British habitats
  • Introduction to principles of land-based machinery
  • Introduction to grass and forage crop production
  • Introduction to land-based workshop practice
  • Tractor driving
  • Assist with agricultural crop production
  • Introduction to dairy and beef cattle husbandry

How will it be delivered?

Tutorials, oral and written assignments and practical work.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs with the following grades:

• English at 3 or above and maths at 2 or above, and

• 2 other GCSE’s at 3 or above
