Sixth Form - Law A Level (FSFC)

A Level Law is an ideal starting point if you would like to enter a career in law or gain an insight into the legal framework that underpins our society. This course deals with complex principles and requires an ability to understand highly detailed legal cases and apply this knowledge to examination questions.

In the first year, you will learn about the nature of law, including sources of law and the differences between criminal and civil law. You will also explore the English legal system; the courts; how law is made, interpreted and reformed; and how you can qualify as a lawyer. You will then focus on criminal law and learn to apply legal principles and cases to hypothetical scenarios.

In the second year, you will focus on problem solving in tort law and human rights law. You will also explore the role of law in society, study the relationship between law and morality and consider whether the law always achieves justice.

During the course, you will have the opportunity to visit the Magistrates’ Court or Crown Court, attend talks from visiting speakers and visit university Law departments.

Learning methods

You will learn through a variety of methods including lectures, group work and individual research. You will be expected to do at least part of your learning using online methods such as researching databases and reading online magazines.

Assessment

There will be regular tests and exam question practice. Assessment is by examination

We ask for a GCSE point score of 5 or above to study a two-year A Level programme.

This will include a 5 or above in English and Maths.

Your average GCSE score will include the Grades for all your GCSE subjects, added together, then divided by the number of subjects you’ve taken.

Please note: If you have a GCSE point score between 4.75 and 5 you may be able to access certain A Level subjects but it will require a discussion with a Curriculum Manager.

Specific entry requirements

GCSE Grade 5 or above in English Language.

Most students progress on to Higher Education to study a wide range of degree courses, including Law. September 2021 saw the introduction of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), changing the traditional route to qualification as a solicitor. In addition, the creation of legal apprenticeships has significantly enhanced opportunities for a career in Law. Students may wish to qualify as a legal executive through the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX) route or undertake the Bar Professional Course to be a barrister. In any event, the successful completion of a qualifying Law degree provides career opportunities in the civil service, police, accountancy, the probation service and in business.
