Course Summary
This is a nationally recognised course and students who undertake this pathway then proceed to take degree courses in areas such as dietetics, pharmacy, optometry, radiography, physiotherapy, biochemistry and engineering. Different combinations of units are available for students wishing to progress in particular career pathways. Students are guided on the most appropriate units to take, as well as being supported with their applications to HE and for relevant work experience. The College has close links with regional universities which welcome mature students from the Access to HE course.
The course is intensive and students should realise that it makes substantial demands in terms of time, commitment and study.
Attendance to all lessons is essential as we do not offer distance learning, therefore it is advisable to ensure work commitments can fit around the timetabled sessions.

You will take three compulsory units:
Study skills
Maths for Scientists
Science Research Project
You can then choose three additional subject specific units which can include:
Core Biology
Chemistry
Human Biology
Mathematics
Physics
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Assessment takes place through course assignments and formal written examinations.
It is essential that you meet all deadlines.
Entry requirements
GCSEs at grade A*-C (or grades 9 – 4) in Mathematics and Science. (ideally English Language but this may be negotiable for applicants with high Maths and Science GCSE grades)
You will be expected to bring maturity and good organisational skills to the course. All applicants who meet the entry requirements will be interviewed following a written assessment.

The majority of students progress to a degree courses, including the competitively-priced Higher Education programmes offered at Wakefield College. The one year HNC in Biomedical Science would be an ideal next step if you are looking for a scientific career such as a laboratory technician. Students have progressed to a variety of universities, including Leeds, Leeds Trinity, Huddersfield, Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam, York, Bradford, Hull and Lancaster.
With further education and training, successful completion of the Access to Higher Education programme can open up routes to a wealth of science-based careers including Radiography, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Environmental Science, Dietetics, Forensic Science and Engineering.
