Course Summary

The UK's Public Services sector is one of the largest employers in the country. Life in the public services can be challenging, rewarding, interesting, and exciting and you will require a variety of skills, knowledge, and expertise to succeed. This course will help you develop all these qualities and give you an introduction to careers within this sector, whilst providing you with many other attributes such as communication and leadership skills, teamworking skills and confidence, that are vitally important in all uniformed public service roles.

Please Note: Work placement opportunities may not be specific to a uniformed service and are aimed at developing your personal and emotional skills to support your course knowledge.

Work placement and voluntary work opportunities are part of your programme which will help transfer the skills you have gained into the working environment.

You can expect to learn through class work, team-based practical’s, visits and outdoor activities. Lectures, oral presentations, tutorials, individual research, and group work will help further develop your communication and team-working skills. You will attend a residential towards the end of the academic year where you will be assessed in challenging situations to demonstrate skills and qualities to allow you to meet the higher grades on your course.

Our students have actively participated in major incident simulations involving a range of emergency services, performing a variety of roles. There are also opportunities to take part in Police riot training simulations and many more activities that expose you to the working environments with the different public services. There will also be additional trips and visits to the Law Courts and residentials.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

There are continuous assessments throughout the course. These consist of projects, presentations, physical and practical demonstrations, and written assignments.

You may also be required to sit a controlled assessment as part of the course requirements; this will aid and develop your time management and rational thinking skills that will help you in your future career.


Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at Grade 9-3, including English or Maths with a Merit profile.

OR

Successful completion of Level 1 Public Services.

Further Study: On completion with the appropriate pass and English and Maths grades you can progress further onto the level 3 programme, or an alternative programme within Wakefield College.
