Course Summary
If you have a particular interest or are considering a career in the music industry, this study programme is for you. Throughout this practical course you will be provided with many opportunities for instrumental development, live performance, music composition and studio recording. You will also develop understanding of the wider music industry and music history and theory.
Course Details
This is a very practical course that provides many opportunities for instrumental development, playing in bands, rehearsing and gigging. This course will help you to understand music and music theory plus will teach you skills in:
- Live performance
- Studio recording
- Listening skills
- Composition
- Music theory
- Roles in the music industry
How will it be delivered and assessed?
You will be assessed on your practical work and coursework.
Entry requirements
- Four GCSEs at grade 3 or above including GCSE English and Maths
- You will need to have a basic standard of musicianship
- You will also need to demonstrate your musical skills at interview

Employment: this course can form the foundations for future study and work in this industry
Education: You could progress onto an Extended Diploma course at Barnsley College in an area of Music such as Music Performance or Music Production. To do so you need to achieve a Merit grade for your Diploma. To progress onto the Extended Diploma in Music Technology you need to gain GCSE Maths at grade C or above and we can offer this alongside the Diploma course. Many students then continue to university
