Course Summary

If you have a particular interest or are considering a career in the music industry, this study programme is for you. Throughout this practical course you will be provided with many opportunities for instrumental development, live performance, music composition and studio recording. You will also develop understanding of the wider music industry, music history and theory.

Please note, this course is not suitable for those pursuing a career as a DJ or a producer who creates music on a computer and can’t play an instrument.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

You will be assessed on your practical work and coursework.

Entry requirements

  • Three GCSEs at grade 3 or above.
  • A basic standard of musicianship. No grades in Music are required.
  • You will be required to demonstrate your musical skills at an interview. Here, you will need to play two songs in your audition, which should demonstrate confidence in: technique, timing, tuning and complexity in playing or singing style.

Equipment required

Your own instrument, and the ability to play it to a reasonable level, is essential.

Employment: this course can form the foundations for future study and work in this industry.

Education: You could progress onto an Extended Diploma course at Barnsley College in an area of Music such as Music Performance or Music Production. To do so, you need to achieve a Merit grade for your Diploma. To progress onto the Extended Diploma in Music Technology you need to gain GCSE Maths at grade 4 or above. We can offer this alongside the Diploma course. Many students then continue to university.
