Course Summary

Apprentices will be trained and assessed against the core and one option. There are five options:

• Electrical power design technician

• Control and instrumentation design technician

• Mechanical design technician

• Piping design technician

• Structural design technician

The broad purpose of the occupation is to contribute to the preparation of design solutions and produce designs, drawings or models for structures, piping, electrical systems, control and instrumentation systems or mechanical components. They must understand technical models, drawings and specifications and be able to create their own. They will identify factors likely to affect design decisions, produce Computer Aided Design (CAD) models and engineering drawings and be able to communicate design information to internal and external parties.

On this programme you will study towards the product design pathway

Pearson BTEC Diploma Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Technical Knowledge)

EAL NVQ Diploma in Engineering Technical Support Level 3

The apprentice will have a depth and breadth of English and mathematics that allow them to operate successfully within their role. This may be met through entry criteria determined by the employer or qualifications and training within the apprenticeship. There will still be a requirement for 19+ students to attempt Maths and English at L2 if they do not have exemptions due the entry requirements for the BTEC qualifications


How will it be delivered and assessed?

There will be continuous assessment of both your practical skills and theoretical knowledge.



Entry requirements

Candidates must have an employer willing to support the requirements of the apprenticeship standard. Individual employers will set the selection criteria for their apprenticeships.

This will typically include a requirement for a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 9-4 (or equivalent qualifications) including Maths, English and a Science or Technical subject.

If you do not have these, we can assess your current level of English/Maths.

This standard aligns to the core engineering skills required for similar occupations in other industries. It meets the professional standards of the Engineering Council for registration as Engineering Technician (Eng Tech) by an appropriate Professional Engineering Institution.
