Course Summary

Electricians fit and repair electrical circuits and wiring in people’s homes and businesses. They also install and maintain electrical equipment, instruments and machinery. If you are good with practical work, can follow technical plans and want a varied job, this could be a great career for you. You’ll also need to be well organised and understand the importance of safety regulations. To qualify as an electrician you will need to complete industry-recognised training and qualifications.

This qualification allows the learner to acquire advanced underpinning knowledge and related skills of electrical installation. It does not require occupational evidence from the workplace, so is suitable for learners who currently do not work within the electrical industry (but may wish to do so).

Course Details

This course will provide learners with the essential practical skills and underpinning knowledge to become fully qualified in the electrical industry. The qualification has mandatory and optional units.

The mandatory units cover:

  • Electrical installation design
  • Environmental technology systems
  • Electrical science and principles
  • Electrical installation craft
  • Inspection, testing, commissioning
  • Diagnosing and correcting electrical faults

The optional units cover:

  • Overseeing and organising the work environment
  • Requirements of BS7671:2008 (2011)
  • Small scale solar photovoltaic systems

The qualification also has integral health and safety in some of the units applicable to the topic being studied.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The assessment involves on-line tests, practical assessments and assignments.

Equipment required

You will need suitable overalls and protective footwear which can be purchased through the College on enrolment. You will also need pen, paper and a folder to organise your work.

Progression on to an Apprenticeship to gain fully qualified status or into employment.
