Course Summary
The qualification provides an exciting introduction to the study of creative digital media production. Learners will develop an understanding of the media industry through analysing media representations and pitching and producing media projects. Learners gain a broad understanding of the subject and learn the skills required to produce media artifacts and then they develop their ability to analyse and deconstruct media images and representations. They learn the communication and planning skills needed to work in teams through vocational media projects. During the optional production unit learners will have the opportunity to create engaging digital media content and platforms.
If you have a general or specific interest in media, and want to explore how the media constructs and represents the world to its audience, then this is the course for you. The course is an exciting blend of studying film alongside creating media products.
Course Details
Unit 1 Media Representations In this unit, you will study a range of media from different sectors, such as music videos, short film extracts, animation, news programmes, websites, digital games and print adverts in order to explore how meaning, messages and values are constructed through formal and stylistic elements.
Unit 4 Pre-Production Portfolio In this unit you will develop your understanding of the essential pre-production work that takes place as part of a creative media production.
Unit 8 Responding to a Commission In this unit, you will understand how to respond to a commission brief with ideas based on the required content, style, audience, purpose and approach proposed by the client. You will work within the requirements and constraints of the client’s specifications and consider your response in terms of ethos, format, budget, platform and duration.
Optional Units:
Unit 10 Film Production In this unit learners will focus on the process of producing a short narrative film or film extract that uses generic conventions. They will research a range of texts before going on to create their own short films.
Unit 14 Digital Magazine Production Through this unit learners will explore codes and conventions of different magazine genres and platforms. They will select and prepare content, and create layouts for a specific genre of magazine.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Unit 1 – External assessment – On screen 2 hour exam consisting of analysis of media products
Unit 4 – Internal assessment / External moderation – Portfolio of pre-production materials for a specific product.
Unit 8 – External Assessment – portfolio of products produced to a specific brief set by the exam board.
Unit 10 – Film Production – Internal assessment / External moderation – Production Portfolio
