Course Summary

The occupational specialism in carpentry and Joinery is a two-year technical study programme designed with employers to develop the skills needed to progress to a career as a site carpenter of joiner in the construction industry.

This qualification supports an understanding of the onsite industry and the construction sector, and you will cover topics such as health and safety, construction science principles and sustainability for the industry.

The construction industry is of global importance and worth £90 billion annually in the UK. The impact that the construction industry has on daily life is diverse, from domestic building, maintenance and the provision of key building services, to large projects in civil engineering, providing essential public infrastructure in the form of roads, schools, and hospitals.

All careers in construction require good communication skills, time management, a strong customer focus and the ability to work both in teams and with other trades.

This T level will combine classroom theory, practical learning, and a minimum 315 hours of industry placement with an employer to make sure a real experience of the workplace is achieved.

This T level programme includes learning that relates to the following UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Goal 4: Quality education

Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth

Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities

You will engage with specialist tutors, support staff and work placements co-ordinators, you will spend 80% of your time at college and 20% on industry placement. This will provide the much-needed real-world experience needed to succeed in this industry.


Course Details

The core content will focus learning around the following areas:

  • Fundamental Health & Safety practices associated with carrying out construction work
  • Scientific principles related to construction activities
  • The construction industry and careers within it
  • Principles of sustainability and design, relevant to construction projects
  • Information, data and principles of measurements
  • Knowledge of carpentry and joinery work undertaken
  • Legislation, regulations and approved standards that apply to the construction industry
  • Skills to plan carpentry and joinery work
  • Skills to set out, cut and fix timber components to carry out structural and first fix carpentry
  • Skills to set out, cut and fix timber components to carry out structural and second fix carpentry
  • Skills to set out, cut and fix timber components to carry out structural and first fix carpentry
  • Skills to set out, mark out produce and assemble and finish joinery products

During your placement you will gain experience of working for an established and successful company. You will work with a supportive, motivated and focused team, gaining real experience of working on client projects. You will put your classroom and workshop learning into practice, developing skills as a carpenter or joiner to support you to become more employable.


How will it be delivered and assessed?

You will be assessed by two externally set exams covering knowledge from the onsite construction common core components, and completion of an employer set project.

In year 2, you will complete the carpentry and joinery specialism assessments.


Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at Grade 9-5, including English, Maths and Science.

Your next steps...

Upon successful completion progression can be to a Level 3 Site Carpentry or Architectural Joinery apprenticeship or you could progress to higher level Apprenticeships such as Level 4: Construction Site Supervisor.

For those who prefer a more academic route, they could progress to a relevant Higher National Certificate (HTQ).
