Course Summary

Thinking of pursuing a career in the sports industry? Interested in the science behind sporting success, such as how good nutrition boosts results? Then BTEC Sport and Exercise Science is the course for you!

This qualification supports a huge range of careers in the sports industry, and progression to degree level study. You’ll explore a broad and interesting range of topics covering areas such as fitness, nutrition and the science behind elite athletic performance.

We offer this course at three separate levels, and the qualification level you opt for will be determined by your future career plans.

As a three A Level equivalent, this is a full time study programme and is therefore ideal if you have decided on a career in the sports industry. You will cover all of the topics offered by our 2 A Level equivalent course plus additional topics.

Course Details

As a full time study programme equivalent to 3 A Levels, you’ll cover the topics of the 1 and 2 A Level equivalent qualifications along with additional topics to build your specialist skills and knowledge. These include:

- Lab and field based fitness testing

- Nutrition for sports performance

- Sports injuries

You’ll gain valuable sector experience throughout your time on the course, combining your classroom learning with high quality industry work placements, trips and visits.

Our students have developed their skills and knowledge through placements at Opta Sports, visits to the English Institute of Sport and physical activity at Rokt activity centre, as well as a range of outdoor challenges.

You will carry out your learning in our state-of-the-art facilities including our Fitness Suite, Sports Barn, Sports Hall and Fitness Lab. Through interactive activities such as group work, role play and presentations, you will improve your self-confidence and communication skills – both of which are essential in the world of work.

You’ll also benefit from various opportunities to gain additional qualifications in areas including coaching and fitness.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment is via a mix of presentations, group work and assignments and externally assessed exams.

Entry requirements

Grade 4 GCSE Science or a pass in a vocational Level 2 Science qualification. General entry criteria also applies. This is available on our website.

Many of our students progress on to university degrees that can lead to careers in Nutrition, Sports Therapy, Sports Analysis, Teaching and Sports Psychology – there are a vast range of opportunities which our industry links will help you to explore.
