Course Summary

Health and Social Care is one of our most popular courses here at HNC, with a qualification in this subject supporting a diverse range of career paths. We offer this course at three separate levels, and the qualification level you opt for will be determined by your future career plans.

Did you know that around 3 million people work in health and social care in the UK, accounting for nearly one in ten paid jobs in the UK? Each and every one of us at some point in our lives are dependent upon the services provided by the sector. Our BTEC Level 3 Health and Social Care qualification is an ideal way to help you to progress to roles where you will not only make a difference to people as individuals, but to society as a whole.

As a three A Level equivalent, this is a full time study programme and is therefore ideal if you have decided on a career working with people.

Course Details

As a full time study programme worth 3 A Levels you’ll cover the topics of the 1 and 2 A Level equivalent qualifications along with additional topics to build your specialist skills and knowledge of the sector. These include:

- Sociological perspectives

- Supporting individuals with additional needs

- Caring for individuals with dementia

- Assessing children’s development and support needs

- Understanding mental well-being

This qualification is tailored to prepare you for work in the social care sector, although you will still study some health related mandatory units.

Students go on to careers in social work, housing support, youth and community work and caring professions.

We are incredibly proud of the experiences on offer from the Health and Social Care department, including work placements. You’ll also have the opportunity to develop new skills, including the chance to undertake your First Aid qualification. We also share how much we care via our departmental enrichment which includes fundraising for gifts for teenagers in hospital at Christmas, and a scheme where we support local care home residents. Our trips and visiting speakers are extensive and include GPs, nurses and experiences such as a visit to Bodyworks.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment is via coursework, core examinations and external assessment. Our departmental staff will provide further advice.
