Course Summary

Bricklayers lay bricks, blocks and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures eg chimney stacks. They might also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects. The range of sites and projects that bricklayers will work on include large commercial developments, new builds in housing, alterations, extensions and restorations. A bricklayer may work one-on-one or on larger jobs where their bricklaying group (gang) may work on a particular section of a building alongside other bricklaying gangs as well as other trades.

Course Details

You will study units from the list below which relate to your job role;

  • Construct masonry cladding
  • Construct cavity walling forming masonry structures
  • Construct solid walling incorporating isolated and attached piers
  • Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
  • Set out masonry structures
  • Understanding construction technology
  • Understanding information, quantities and communication with others

How will it be delivered and assessed?

You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments. You will be assessed both in College and in your place of work.

Entry requirements

  • You will need to be at least 16 years of age
  • You will hold two GCSEs at grade A*-E, plus GCSE maths and English at grade 3 or above
  • It is desirable that you have English and maths at grade 4/C or above but this is not essential as functional skills is delivered as part of the apprenticeship programme
  • You will need to find an employer to employ you as an apprentice. Please see our Apprenticeship vacancies.

Equipment required

You will be required to provide paper, writing materials, A4 ring binder file, extra wide dividers and clear plastic wallets.

Your next steps...

Upon completion you could progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Bricklaying or apply for job roles including:

  • Bricklayer
  • Craft Mason

On completion of this Apprenticeship, the apprentice will have satisfied the requirements to obtain a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Card at the appropriate level. As a result of achieving the Apprenticeship, there will be an entitlement to join the Federation of Master Builders’ continuous professional development (CPD) scheme for individual tradespeople.
