Course Summary

This course develops students’ scientific skills, knowledge and understanding and stretches them to apply these to a scientific setting. It will hone students’ cognitive and problem-solving skills, along with improving their ability to communicate effectively. The self-management and resilience required for this course will provide an excellent basis to enter higher education or employment. This challenging course covers in-depth aspects in biology, chemistry and physics. The variety of topics range from detailed cell structure to periodicity and properties of elements, as well as the use of waves in communication. Students will explore a range of practical chemistry techniques and deduce conclusions and evaluations from results they have independently produced.

Equivalent in size to three A Levels. The extended diploma in Applied science is designed as a two-year, full-time course that meets entry requirements in its own right for learners who want to progress to higher education courses in the applied science sector before entering employment. It has been developed so that students build a wide range of science knowledge and a high level of understanding, A level standard, alongside lots of practical skills. We cover all three disciplines of science (biology, chemistry & physics).
