Course Summary

The Core Maths qualification is for students who have passed GCSE Mathematics at Grade 5 or above but have decided not to study A Level Mathematics. It builds upon and strengthens existing skills and focuses on using and applying Mathematics to solve problems relevant to our everyday lives. Students in Social Sciences, Business, Psychology, Sciences and Health Sciences who are not taking A Level Mathematics may find the Core Maths element useful in preparing for university study where a working application of Maths or Statistics may be required.

Course Details

Core Maths has been designed to maintain and develop real-life Maths skills. What you study is not purely theoretical or abstract; it can be applied on a day-to-day basis in work, study or life and will include financial and statistical elements. It will also help with other A Level subjects – in particular with Science, Geography, Business Studies, Psychology and Economics. It is studied over one year with two examinations at the end of the course.

Students who study Maths after GCSE may improve their career choices and increase their earning potential. The Level 3 qualification in Core Maths counts towards the equivalent UCAS points as an AS Level.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

100% Exam based.

Entry requirements

4 GCSE grades 9-4, with a 5 in GCSE Maths.

Core Maths is highly recommended for students of A level Sciences, Psychology and Business Studies if A level Maths is not one of your other A level choices.

Our Applied Science students also study Core Maths as part of their offering.
