Horticulture - Level 2

A brilliant general introduction to horticulture, focussing on the skills needed to plant and care for domestic gardens and parks. The course is practical-based with some theory, providing foundation skills for a horticulture career or progression onto the level three qualification.

Studying this course, you will learn the foundational skills for a career in horticulture – the care and use of plants for gardens, parks and and sports. You will learn how to work safely in a horticulture workplace.

You will learn to identify plants, how to ensure they grow and thrive outdoors, and the science that explains why a plant will do well or badly. You’ll learn the practical techniques that establish and maintain parks, gardens and sport pitches

health and safety

plant identification

establishment and maintenance of plants outdoors

business and horticultural science

machinery and turf care

The course includes lectures and classroom-based work mixed with practical sessions, enabling you relevant practical experience and industry skills.

Work is assessed through an exam and a synoptic assessment, which is a multi-part simulated business exercise.

4 GCSEs at grading level 3 (Old GCSE grade E) or above including Maths and English with Science desirable. Alternatively a suitable Level 1 vocational qualification with English and Maths at Level 1.

You will require a work placement on this course.

This means you will need to collect 150 hours of work experience with an established business in the horticultural sector. Typically this includes garden centres, plant nurseries, landscape contractors and local estate gardens.
