English Language is the study of the various texts that surround us each and every day, and the functions, purposes and hidden meanings of the language that we encounter. Studying English Language will ensure that students will never look at a piece of text in the same way again. Students are encouraged to pick apart texts, develop detailed grammar knowledge and explore a range of linguistic issues, such as the representations of individuals and groups, the processes used to position and influence readers, and also analyse and consider society’s attitudes to the development and change of language and its use. Students will also consider the theories behind language choices and explore the way we acquire language itself from birth to adulthood.
The course aims to provide students with a comprehensive and intensive understanding of linguistic concepts, and will introduce them to a range of texts, from newspaper articles to political speeches, even recipes and fairy tales. Students will also have the chance to produce their own texts to see just how language is used effectively for their NEA coursework.
This course will be of interest to anyone who can’t help but analyse everything they see, read or hear. The focus is on non-fiction and it is all about analysing words and their meanings; exploring how writers set out to affect their readers through their choice of language. Excellent analytical skills are essential, as well effective communication skills. The course will also give the opportunity to write creatively in a number of different genres, so accurate writing skills are a necessity.

Non-examined assessment - Language in Action = 20%
Grade 4 in GCSE English Language and (where taken) Grade 4 in GCSE English Literature. *Please note with government changes to GCSE grading system (9-1) we reserve the right to adjust subject entry requirements and to withdraw subjects which do not meet minimum numbers. *All subject specific entry requirements are in addition to the General Entry Requirements

This course will develop skills as analyst and writer, and make you an effective communicator, providing students access to a range of potential career paths. Previous students have gone on to study Law, History, Politics as well as English and its related courses at degree level. Others have also pursued a wide range of careers including journalism, television production, PR and education.
