Overview

On completion of this apprenticeship the individual will be a competent and job-ready Healthcare Support Worker. The apprenticeship standard provides a high level description of the skills, knowledge, values and behaviours required of the Healthcare Support Worker apprentice (Level 2).
This course allows you to choose optional units which are suitable to your work area.

What you will study

To gain the Certificate you must achieve 46 credits, with 24 gained from the following mandatory units: -

Introduction to personal development in health, social care or children's and young people’s settings

Introduction to communication in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings

Introduction to duty of care in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings

Introduction to equality and inclusion in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings

The role of the health and social care worker

Contribute to health and safety in health and social care

The principles of Infection Prevention and Control

Causes and Spread of Infection

Implement person centred approaches in health and social care

Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care

Handle information in health and social care settings

In addition to the core units, you will choose optional units that suit your current work role, and these will be discussed and planned with your Assessor, to achieve a further 22 credits.


How will it be delivered?

How you will be assessed

You must complete the approved qualification named in each option prior to taking the end-point assessment.

You will be allocated an Assessor who will visit you in your workplace and observe you carrying out your daily tasks and duties. You will be required to compile an electronic portfolio of evidence of your competence and knowledge, which your Assessor will help you to prepare. You will need to work towards an end point assessment, which includes the following components:

1. A multiple choice and short answer test

2. An observation of practice undertaken in the workplace

3. A learning journal completed by the apprentice with an interview


Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements except a College interview, and you must be at least 16 years of age. However, since this qualification is assessed in the workplace, you need a job or work placement which offers you suitable experience and the chance to demonstrate the necessary skills. Apprentices without Level 1 English and maths will need to achieve this prior to taking the end-point assessment. They must also sit the level 2 test for both English and Maths.

Further study

Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Support Services.  It is expected that you would then progress to specialist qualifications reflecting the context of your job role.
