You will study 8-11 of 14 units:

•Starting work in the science sector

You will develop an awareness of the different types of job available in the science sector and explore the skills and personal qualities that such jobs require

•Using equipment to make scientific observations and measurements

You will gain the knowledge, skills and understanding required to make observations and measurements in order to undertake scientific explorations safely and effectively using the relevant equipment.

•Skills and techniques for chemistry investigations

This unit will cover some of the fundamental topics in chemistry, including extraction of raw materials from the Earth and its atmosphere, classification, properties of materials, chemical reactions and the factors that affect chemical reactions

•The study of living systems

You will develop your biology practical skills and your underpinning knowledge and understanding of biology, including applications in the workplace and effects on the environment and society

•Physics and our universe

You will have the opportunity to find out about the fundamental principles of physics and our universe. You will be looking at energy, waves, radiation and space exploration. You will also construct simple electric circuits and take electrical measurements

•Growing plants for commercial use

You will gain the knowledge and skills needed to grow plants successfully and how to measure the commercial success of plant growth

•Causes of disease and maintaining health

You will investigate a range of factors affecting health and learn to recognise symptoms of disease. You will gain an awareness of common diseases and their causes and also examine a range of particular diseases which are prevalent in the developed and the developing worlds and are of particular topical interest

•Forensic detection

In this unit you will develop skills, understanding and knowledge of scientific procedures by applying biological, chemical and physical analytical techniques to forensic science case studies

•Healthier living

The aim of this unit is to introduce you to ways in which you can contribute to a healthy lifestyle and to encourage you to demonstrate activities which will improve your own lifestyle

•Making and testing cosmetic products

You will develop skills in handling laboratory apparatus, making observations and taking measurements. You will explore the application of underlying scientific principles and techniques and learn how to observe health and safety at work requirements and conduct risk assessments appropriately

•Practical scientific project

You will build on existing theories or practical work by conducting a practical science project related to their area of interest

•Making useful scientific devices

You will apply your scientific knowledge and develop practical skills by making two types of scientific devices and testing their effectiveness

•Using mathematical tools in science

In this unit is you will use mathematical tools which are essential for working in a science environment. Starting with basic numbers and simple algebraic manipulation you will move onto collecting and interpreting data on graphs and charts

•Science in the world

In this unit you will investigate how the media and society interact with the scientific community.

How will it be delivered?

You will be assessed by assignments, involving practical tasks and written work.  You will have an external exam and a formal practical assessment.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs with the following grades:

  • English at grade 2 and maths at grade 1 or above, and
  • 2 other GCSEs grade 2 or above including a science subject
