You will study 7 mandatory units:
- Principles and applications of science I
This unit covers some of the key science concepts in biology, chemistry and physics. The topic areas covered in this unit include: animal and plant cells; tissues; atomic structure and bonding; chemical and physical properties of substances related to their uses; waves and their application in communications.
- Practical scientific procedures and techniques
You will be introduced to quantitative laboratory techniques, calibration, chromatography, calorimetry and laboratory safety, which are relevant to the chemical and life science industries.
- Science investigation techniques
You will cover the stages involved and the skills needed in planning a scientific investigation: how to record, interpret, draw scientific conclusions and evaluate.
- Laboratory techniques and their application
This unit covers the importance of health and safety in work place laboratories, how data is stored and communicated and how organic liquids and solids are made and tested industrially.
- Principles and applications of science II
This unit builds on and extends the range of key science concepts in biology, chemistry and physics that were covered in Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Science I.
In this unit, you will carry out an investigative project that you have chosen in collaboration with your teacher. You will choose one topic area that interests you and this will form the basis of your investigative project. You will carry out a scientific literature search and review, considering the project’s aims and objectives, then produce a realistic plan and carry out the project safely using your scientific investigation skills, project management skills and what you have learnt from the other units. Finally, you will prepare an evaluative report that will consider the project outcomes and suggest amendments that may have improved those outcomes.
- Contemporary issues in science
This unit will enable you to develop your skills and understanding in evaluating the impact of contemporary scientific issues and how they are discussed in publications.
You will also study 6 of 19 optional units, including:
- Applications of inorganic chemistry
- Applications of organic chemistry
- Electrical circuits and their applications
- Astronomy and space science
- Industrial chemical analysis
- Practical chemical analysis
- Materials science
You will be assessed with coursework and practical assignments. Although there are no final examinations, your theoretical knowledge is sometimes assessed through short tests.
A minimum of 5 GCSEs with the following grades: English and maths at grade 4 or above, and 3 other GCSEs grade 4 or above.
You could find employment in a scientific and technical area, for example laboratories and production research and development.
