This course will give you the training you need to become both a diagnostic and practising beauty therapist.


You will work through the course flexibly and at your own place.You will be based in a purpose-built learning environment, which is run as a commercial salon with clients you will eventually be offering treatments to. You will study 8 mandatory units: • Provide facial skin care treatment You will improve and maintaining facial skin condition using a variety of treatments. These treatments include: skin exfoliation, skin warming, extraction, facial massage, mask treatments and the use of facial products. Such treatments must be successfully provided to a range of clients with a variety of skin types and conditions. • Enhance the appearance of eyebrows and eyelashes In this unit you will provide eyelash and eyebrow treatments. It covers the use of a variety of consultation techniques to establish the treatment and outcomes required by the client. You will need to be able to provide eyebrow shaping and artificial lash treatments using a variety of work techniques. You will also need to be able to tint eyebrows and lashes for clients with different colouring characteristics (i.e. fair, red, dark and white). • Carry out waxing services This unit is about removing hair using waxing techniques. The areas to be treated include the eyebrows, face, legs, underarm and the bikini line. You will need to be able to consult with the client, prepare and plan for the treatment. You will also need to provide aftercare advice to the client, particularly around the avoidance of certain activities and the use of home care products. • Provide manicure services You will consult with the client, recognising any contra-indications, preparing for the service and producing a service plan. The unit also covers filing and buffing the nails, using skin and cuticle treatments, massaging the hand and lower arm and providing a suitable nail finish. • Providing pedicure services You will consult with the client, recognising any contraindications, preparing for the service and producing a service plan. The unit also covers filing the nails, applying skin and cuticle treatments, cleansing and drying the feet, removing excessive hard skin, massaging the foot and lower leg and providing a suitable nail finish. • Develop and maintain effectiveness at work This unit is about taking responsibility for improving your performance at work and working well with your colleagues so as to make a positive contribution to the overall effectiveness of your salon. • Promote additional services or products to customers You will learn the need to keep pace with new developments and to encourage your clients to take an interest in them. Clients expect more and more services or products to be offered to meet their own growing expectations. They need to be made aware of what is available from your salon to give them a greater choice. • Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety This unit is about providing you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to be responsible for health and safety in the workplace. This unit is for everyone at work (whether paid, unpaid, full or part-time). It is about being aware of the main risks in your workplace and knowing how to identify and deal with them. You will also study 2-3 of 6 optional units: • Carry out ear piercing • Provide make-up services • Assist with spa operations • Enhance appearance using skin camouflage • Provide threading services • Fulfil salon reception duties You will also study maths and English, if required. How will it be delivered?

Your practical skills will be assessed, providing treatments in a commercial beauty salon. You will also need to submit a portfolio of the work you complete during the course as evidence.

Entry requirements

• GCSE English at grade 3 or above and Maths at grade 2 or above You should demonstrate an interest or knowledge of working in the beauty therapy industry and wish to take up a career in this area.
