Overview

Are you curious about how social change can be explained, and what research and policy tells us about how society works and how we experience life? Sociology is the study of society, and you will gain a fascinating insight into how human actions are shaped by cultural and social structures.

The topics you will study will see you exploring the fascinating question of how social change can be explained. These include:

• Crime and deviance
• Beliefs in society
• Family and households
• Education in Britain
• Sociological theory and perspectives
• Research methods

Under the direction of our qualified teachers, you will see your thoughts stretched and challenged. Sociology sees you exploring some controversial topics, and you are likely to continue thinking outside of the classroom!
You will debate key sociological issues such as poverty, crime and social conflict and you may find you change your views on the world around you.

Trips and visits will extend your knowledge and experience. These have included a trip to Prison, a visit to London and a tour of religious institutions in Huddersfield. You could also get involved as a Sociology Ambassador, which is an ideal way to grow your skills to prepare you for working with others from all walks of life.

Entry requirements

Grade 4 in a traditional written subject, for example GCSE History or English Literature. General entry criteria will also apply. Details are available on our website.
